I am an Occupational Therapist based in Wellington. I am really passionate about helping kids thrive.
When I’m not working, I love spending time with my husband and two boys. We’re all about being active – think mountain biking and exploring beautiful New Zealand. Family is super important to me, and she really values being able to be there for her kids’ school and activities.
As well as being an Occupational Therapist, registered at the Occupational Therapy Board of New Zealand, I also have additional qualifications:
- Tomatis® level 2 consultant and Maestro certified
- Sensory Integration trained
- Dynamic Movement Intervention Introductory Level C trained
- Neuro developmental therapy (Bobath) trained
- Various other short courses
I have a paediatric occupational therapy clinic in Wellington and use Tomatis® as one of the important tools in my therapy toolbox. www.enablingkids.co.nz
Why I work with the Tomatis Method:
“People often ask me, “Why do you use the Tomatis® Method in your work at Enabling Kids?” It’s a fantastic question! For me, it all comes down to wanting to offer the most comprehensive and effective support possible for the children I work with.
The Tomatis® Method, which involves auditory stimulation, can be incredibly beneficial for so many areas of development. We know that listening is so much more than just hearing; it’s about how we process and make sense of the sounds around us. It influences everything from communication and learning to sensory regulation, motor skills and emotional regulation.
I’ve seen firsthand how Tomatis® can help children who struggle with attention, language delays, sensory processing challenges, and more. It’s amazing to witness the positive changes as their listening abilities improve. By enhancing their auditory processing, we’re often unlocking potential in other areas too. I’ve found it to be an invaluable tool in my ‘therapy toolbox,’ and it often complements the other therapies I provide.
Each listening program is personalized, and that’s what makes it so powerful. In short, I work with the Tomatis® Method because I believe it can make a significant difference in helping children thrive and reach their full potential.”
Results for myself:
As a pediatric occupational therapist, I firmly believe in experiencing things firsthand before expecting a child to do them. About 10 years ago, during my pregnancy, I was told that premature birth was likely. It was around this time that I first trained in the Tomatis® Method, and my trainer suggested I complete some programs myself. I did 2.5 Tomatis® programs while pregnant, and although my son was still born prematurely at 34 weeks, he truly defied medical expectations. He breathed independently from the start, spent only seven nights in the Neonatal ICU, and adapted to life outside the womb remarkably well. The pediatricians were surprised he was born so early. We attribute this incredible outcome to the positive effects of the Tomatis® Method on him as a fetus and the benefits of auditory stimulation through bone conduction. Of course, every pregnancy and birth is unique, but this experience profoundly showed us the potential of this method.
The benefits weren’t just for my unborn son, though. I also experienced significant personal improvements. I felt much calmer, slept better, and doctor’s appointments became less stressful because I could concentrate and absorb the medical information more easily. I also felt energized after listening sessions, and friends and family commented on how much I was still able to do despite being pregnant.
Fast forward to recently, and that same son just completed another Tomatis® listening program. In his own words, ‘Mum, I am able to write the ideas that I have in my head down when we do writing at school.’ Hearing that makes it all worthwhile.
I acknowledge that results can vary and that nothing is guaranteed. However, the Tomatis® Method is undoubtedly a valuable tool that I am always happy to explore to achieve positive outcomes.
