Tomatis ® Practitioner Level 1; Masters of Science in Occupational Therapy

Hi, my name is Grace. I grew up in the United States and decided to get my Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy after 5 years of travelling abroad in my 20s. Occupational Therapy has offered me continued learning in many varied settings and the opportunity to relocate to New Zealand, where I met my husband eventually. After about 10 years into my career as an Occupational Therapist, I was introduced to the Tomatis® Method and was very excited to see how it fast-tracks so many of the skills that I work on with clients. From laying the foundation in the nervous system for more effective learning, communication and improved self-regulation to heightened levels of perception, processing, and cognitive skills, here is a tool that is both a pleasure to use and immensely practical, with so many applications of helping people.

Why I work with Tomatis®

I choose to work with Tomatis® because it is an absolute joy for me to watch lives be transformed by this method. It is the most interesting and rewarding work I have done as an Occupational Therapist and is a pleasure to receive and administer.

I believe one of the most important things we can foster in this world is a connection to ourselves and others. When we have the skills to be able to give our undivided attention and fully listen – it’s a powerful force for learning, growth and happiness, which is what can be so transformative for clients on many different levels.

Results

Most of my clients are school-aged children whose parents come to me looking to assist them with various learning or relational/emotional difficulties. The results I most commonly see are improvements in abilities to learn and focus, well-being, clarity in thoughts, and sleep quality. It makes my day when an excited parent tells me of a new skill or development in their child while undergoing listening therapy! Some parents report the whole family dynamic changing for the better. I have seen a reclusive teenage boy who had a monotone mumble develop into a self-confident young man who initiated conversions with adults and asserted himself among peers – leading vs sitting in the back as he did before. I’ve seen clients with Asperger’s diagnosis improve their social connections- build deeper friendships, and become more flexible in their thinking and tolerance for change.

I have seen children who could not follow through on basic requests and constantly resisted or questioned ‘why’. (which can be exhausting for the parents or teacher) become happy to do as asked without reminding, understanding what was said and why they need to do as asked. Relationships between the child and caregiver/teacher are often significantly more enjoyable and easy.
